Because of my personal experience and after my transfer from Seoul to New York, I have attempted to embody the symbolic and fantastic world in my art, which reveals the psychological aspects of human beings confronting a new environment and a new society.
Each piece is created primarily with sumi ink on Korean paper. While traditional Asian drawing materials are used, cartoonistic forms composed of simple lines reflect the concept of “cuteness,” which is an important trend in Asian pop culture.
Through simple, cute, but strangely dark imagery, I examine the psychological states and emotions that are experienced in one’s life. Most people have left their familiar environments and been faced with unexpected situations as a process of their personal growth. In my drawings, the perception of life as an unpredictable journey is demonstrated through various surrealistic figurations, ranging from legendary animals, which drag a girl’s head, to rolling balls, which resemble the earth.
